The Unstable Object of Ritual

Yukio Lippit
Harvard University

Colorful Realm of Living Beings (Doshoku sai-e; ca. 1757-1766) held different meanings for its painter (Ito Jakuchu), the painter's Zen master (Daiten Kenjo), the monastic community to which it was donated (Shokokuji), and its public audience in Kyoto.
This presentation examines the multiplicity of Colorful Realm and its pictorial qualities in relation to the work's long evolution, circumstances of production, and the changing conditions of ritual display in urban monasteries of the Edo period.
