Professor emeritus of Japanese Studies at the University of Vienna where he taught from 1978 to 2012. Specialized in the sociology of Japan (work and leisure, old age, visual and musical sociology). 8 monographs, 40 books (co) edited, appr. 200 articles in books and journals in German, English and Japanese. ). Recipient of Yamagata Bantō Prize 2005.
