IAJS Chair, Dr. Nissim Otmazgin, met this morning (July 31, 2013) with Mr.Mr. Shimomura Hakubun, the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. In the meeting, Dr. Otmazgin briefed the minister about Japanese studies in Israel and told about some of the difficulties we are facing (lack in digital research and teaching materials in Japanese, need of more scholarships for students) and conveyed our hope for more collaboration with Japanese scholars and universities. Mr. Shimomura was surprised to hear about the scale of interest in Japanese studies in Israel and emphasized his office's commitment to assist the promotion of Japanese studies in the world.
  • CFP: The Third Biennial IAJS Conference. The Biennial Conference of the Israeli Association of Japanese Studies will be held at the University of Haifa and the Bezalel Academy of Arts, Jerusalem on 11–13 June 2017. Conference theme: The Heisei Era in Retrospect: Major Trends in Post-Industrial and Post-Consumer Japa. We invite proposals for papers and/or panels. The last date for proposals is 31 December 2016. More details in this CFP
 
  • Promotion of International Understanding Award to Prof. Ben-Ami Shillony.  IAJS congratulates Prof. Ben-Ami Shillony, whose book "Yapan bemabat ishi" (Japan as I see it), published earlier this year in Japan under the title "Nihon no tsuyosa no himitsu" (Japan's secret of strength) by Nisshin Hōdō publishing, received the Grand "Prize Kokusai Rikai Sokushin Sho” (Promotion of International Understanding award). The prize is awarded once a year by the Sendai-based "International Foundation for Promotion of Languages and Culture", for the best book promoting international understanding.   read more in the Hebrew University Site (in hebrew)
